چکیده

Abstract Twisted structures are ubiquitous in plants and animals. Cellulose chitin natural polymers that form the structural skeleton of various twisted systems observed across different length scales, ranging from molecular to nano, micro, macro scale. In addition, cellulose helicoidal found be responsible for coloration, enhanced mechanical properties, motion. This review first addresses chitin‐based chiral nanoscale arrangements. Attention is given nanocrystals, water interactions, out‐of‐equilibrium colorful formed by derivatives, chitin's optical properties. The discussion progresses micro millimeter where specific examples presented showcase specialized helical cellulose‐based organizations. chosen illustrate formation helicities, adaptative shapes, movements at varying such as vascular leaf petioles micro‐scale millimeter‐scale tendrils awns Erodium fruits. So far, results indicate significant work should done on systems. much must learned nature produce novel functional materials. aims provide a comprehensive overview state‐of‐the‐art study their potential applications.

Chitin and Chitosan: Structure, Properties and Applications

Chitin and chitosan are the most abundant natural amino polysaccharide that are non-toxic, biodegradable and biocompatible. They have become of great interest not only as an underutilized resource, but also as a new functional material of high potential in various fields. They are biopolymers having immense structural possibilities for chemical and mechanical modifications to generate novel pro...

Formation of nematic ordered cellulose and chitin

We proposed in a previous paper a unique form of j3-glucan association, nematic ordered cellulose (NOC) that is molecularly ordered, yet non-crystalline. NOC has unique characteristics; in particular, its surface properties provide with a function of tracks or scaffolds for regulated movements and fiber-production or Acetobacter xylinum [Kondo et al. 2002. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 99: 14008-1...

Chitin Nanofibers, Preparations and Applications

Chitin nanofibers (CNFs) are mainly extracted from crab and prawn shells [1, 2] and recetly found in small amount in edible species of mushrooms [3]. CNFs are composed of chitin compound. Chitin in powder form is obtained from fish industry wastes which is otherwise thrown as industrial waste. Since CNFs are biodegradable having typical width 10-20 nm and large surface-to-mass ratio thus they a...

Chitin Deacetylases: Properties and Applications

Chitin deacetylases, occurring in marine bacteria, several fungi and a few insects, catalyze the deacetylation of chitin, a structural biopolymer found in countless forms of marine life, fungal cell and spore walls as well as insect cuticle and peritrophic matrices. The deacetylases recognize a sequence of four GlcNAc units in the substrate, one of which undergoes deacetylation: the resulting c...

Interspecific interactions drive chitin and cellulose degradation by aquatic microorganisms

Complex biopolymers (BPs) such as chitin and cellulose provide the majority of organic carbon in aquatic ecosystems, but the mechanisms by which communities of bacteria in natural systems exploit them are unclear. Previous degradation experiments in artificial systems predominantly used microcosms containing a single bacterial species, neglecting effects of interspecific interactions. By constr...
